Separate, the chasm widens
where you were
you are not now
and there is none left to save you
your guts are pierced
like a bloated sow
*
Once you walked
on wild flower fields
pink and reds
beckoned to your touch
beauty climbed upon a vine then
the world was kind
and often just
*
Now your fingers
reek of sulfur
your face removed
in acid wash
your foul lips
drip lies deceitful
wicked words are stolen, lost
*
Once you walked
on wild flower fields
pink and reds
beckoned to your touch
beauty climbed upon a vine then
the world was kind
and often just
*
Mischief is now your maker
poison your new best friend
the black adder is the taker
of lust you need not pretend
crush her eggs beneath your heel
the viper rises from its nest
each work day
violence is breeding
this is evil’s ample test
*
Once you walked
on wild flower fields
pink and reds
beckoned to your touch
beauty climbed upon a vine then
the world was kind
and often just
*
Big feet outpacing, running
drunken on destruction’s feast
sanguine drips from carnage found here
ample payment for the beast
straight ways now are crooked
it now parallels the mind
what you find
where they’ve been digging
you’d best hold back
and take some time
*
Once you walked
on wild flower fields
pink and reds
beckoned to your touch
beauty climbed upon a vine then
the world was kind
and often just
*
Tread we over light so boldly
dried the skulls
that once knew peace
behold the dark
he holds a headless
we all join in a corporate screech
groping along the wall so blindly
those who can no longer see
what we joined with half our hearts then
this is Hell’s new jubilee
*
Once we walked
on wild flower fields
pink and reds
beckoned to our touch
beauty climbed upon a vine then
the world was kind
and often just

Some would rather tread the path of dried skulls than wild flower fields!

This is a great poem, Leslie! My favorite part is:
Now your fingers
reek of sulfur
your face removed
in acid wash
your foul lips
drip lies deceitful
wicked words are stolen, lost
I particularly like the use of “acid wash.” It says it all!
The change in “you” to “we” at the end was very apt for this thrilling piece. Subtle, but so true.

Oh I’m glad you liked that. The acid wash came to mind as something we did with copper sculpture (well we used alot of acid in the lab as well).
Thanks for noticing the pronoun change.

The acid wash was great and the change of one word meant a lot!

I love the symbolism of this poem. The contrast between a hell bent race and a quiet walk in spring fields sets this up for a nice dark end.

The whispering chorus which was initially the beginning of the poem creates a rather fatalistic effect doesnt it? Thanks so much Dani

this poem gives me chills – the poem shows the dark places a few steps from the light – I am reminded of the battlefield of Verdun and the bones there from Hell’s Jubilee…

The bloated sow in the first stanza sets the tone for the rest of this striking poem, Leslie. As someone has already mentioned, I also love the adder’s nest, and the mention of ‘Hell’s Jubilee’ … Evocative symbols!

The poetic voice does allow for symbols to take on an undertone. Thanks Thomas – you inspire and instruct with your strong voice my friend.

From start to finish, you have crafted a sublime piece here, Leslie! Your visionary is rich, beautiful and yet wickedly dark! You knocked the 5th stanza, beginning with the line “Mischief is now your maker,” completely out of the park. Loved it, Leslie!

Leslie, I’m sorry my comment comes so late on this one, but I really wanted to let in sink in and read it a few times with some distance in between. The prose is stunningly lovely; the entirety of the piece is truly a beautiful dark dance of words!
